Melasma is a deeper, denser pigmentation than regular sunspots and may have a hormonal instigating influence such as pregnancy.
At Glow Medi Spa, we have several options to treat Melasma which is also known as “the mask of pregnancy”. Melasma is often difficult to treat and may not respond to traditional de-pigmentation treatments such as IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). Melasma should be treated carefully and cautiously. There is no cure and recurrence is common. Treatments can improve the appearance of the pigmentation.
What is Melasma?
Melasma is a skin condition which has deeper, denser pigmentation than regular “sunspots”. It may be associated with hormonal changes such as with pregnancy or starting the birth control pill. Melasma may resolve spontaneously after pregnancy, however, melasma can sometimes be permanent and there is no known “cure”. Treatments are geared towards improving the appearance of the pigmentation but it is important for the client to know that melasma often recurs so it is very important to avoid triggers such as sun exposure.
What are the Treatment Options for Melasma?
At Glow Medi Spa, we offer several options depending on the extent of the melasma, previous treatments and the response to those treatments, the client’s skin type, and the client’s expectations. Our most common treatments include: Fraxel Dual Laser treatments, PicoSure Laser Treatment and topical Medical Grade Skin Care Products. Sun protection is an essential recommendation to maintain the results achieved with treatments and also to prevent further worsening of melasma.
Fraxel Dual Laser Treatment is one of the few FDA approved treatments for melasma. Fraxel is able to treat deeper into the skin than most other lasers and effectively targets the deep pigmentation.
The PicoSure laser is very fast (with speed measured in trillionths of a second) and it mechanically disrupts the pigment instead of using high heat. PicoSure treatments are suitable for a variety of skin types and have no downtime.
At Glow Medi Spa, we carry several topical creams and serums which help to inhibit the production of melanin. Melanin produces pigmentation. We also carry medical grade sun blocks for optimal sun protection and prevention.
The treatment of melasma can be difficult and sometimes frustrating due to the high recurrence rate. A consultation is the best way to decide which treatment is most appropriate for the client.
